In almost any home besides one that is perfectly insulated, there will be “leaks” in the insulation that allow cold air to penetrate the walls of your home and lower the temperature. They include:

  • The top openings of interior partition wall cavities
  • Chimneys: only insulation made from glass fibers or rock wool should be used; cellulose, plastic, and combustible items can melt or catch fire. Avoid putting any insulation around hot flue pipes.
  • The area around attic trap doors and entry doors
  • Staircase ceilings and dropped ceilings
  • Around pipes: this includes around sinks and toilets.
  • Any ducts that go through an attic wall or floor.
